Bacteria colonize under extreme conditions where no man can survive for long, for example salt lakes, geysers and the polar regions. One of the reasons they are able to survive under life-threatening conditions, is their production of natural protective substances. Scientists and companies are now looking for ways to produce such protective substances on large scale to make them available for humans.
